Background of the Study
Local fishing economies are integral to the livelihoods of coastal communities, particularly in regions such as Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State. These economies depend heavily on sustainable fishery practices, which are increasingly challenged by the impacts of climate change, including altered fish migration patterns, sea-level rise, and increased frequency of extreme weather events (Oluwasegun, 2023). Forensic economic analyses have shown that adaptive strategies, such as diversified fishing techniques and community-based management, can enhance resilience (Akinola, 2024). This study examines the current state of local fishing economies in Ilaje, exploring how climate change is influencing production, market dynamics, and community welfare. Emphasis is placed on identifying both vulnerabilities and adaptive capacities within the local context. The integration of traditional ecological knowledge with modern environmental management practices is highlighted as a potential pathway for sustaining economic stability in the face of environmental uncertainty (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Local fishing communities in Ilaje face significant challenges due to the adverse effects of climate change. Altered marine ecosystems, decreased fish stocks, and unpredictable weather patterns have led to reduced income stability and heightened economic vulnerability (Adebisi, 2023). The absence of effective adaptation strategies and supportive government policies further exacerbates these challenges. This study seeks to evaluate the resilience of local fishing economies in the face of climate change and to identify measures that can enhance adaptive capacities, ensuring long-term economic sustainability (Olu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of climate change on local fishing economies.

  2. To identify adaptive strategies employed by fishing communities.

  3. To propose measures to enhance economic resilience.

Research Questions:

  1. How does climate change affect fishery production and local incomes?

  2. What adaptive strategies are currently in use by fishing communities?

  3. What interventions can enhance the resilience of local fishing economies?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Climate change significantly reduces fishery yields.

  2. H₂: Community-based adaptation strategies improve economic resilience.

  3. H₃: Government interventions positively influence the sustainability of fishing economies.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the critical relationship between climate change and local fishing economies, offering insights into adaptive strategies that can safeguard livelihoods. The findings will inform policy development and community planning, contributing to more resilient coastal economies in Ilaje (Adesina, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to local fishing economies in Ilaje Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on the impacts of climate change and adaptive strategies within this context.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Fishing Economy: The economic system based on fishing and related activities.

  2. Climate Change: Long-term alterations in temperature and weather patterns affecting marine ecosystems.

  3. Adaptive Capacity: The ability of a system to adjust to changes and mitigate adverse impacts.
